Pattern

Dan-Gun

Dan-Gun is named after the Holy Dan Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year 2,333BC.

Number of Movements: 21
Starting Position – Parallel ready stance
8th Kup opening stance diagram

The diagram for this pattern assumes that the student is stood on line AB and is facing D.

  1. Move the left foot to B forming a right L-stance, executing a middle knife hand guarding block.
  2. Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
  3. Move the right foot to A turning clockwise to form a left L-stance, executing a middle knife hand guarding block.
  4. Move the left foot to A forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
  5. Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a left low outer forearm block.
  6. Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
  7. Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
  8. Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
  9. Move the left foot to E, turning counter clockwise to form a right L-stance, executing a twin forearm block.
  10. Move the right foot to E forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
  11. Move the right foot to F turning clockwise to form a left L-stance, executing a twin forearm block.
  1. Move the left foot to F forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
  2. Move the left foot to C forming a left walking stance, executing a left low outer forearm block.
  3. Execute a left rising block, maintaining the left walking stance. Perform 13 and 14 in a continuous motion.
  4. Move the right foot to C forming a right walking, executing a right rising block.
  5. Move the left foot to C forming a left walking stance, executing a left rising block.
  6. Move the right foot to C forming a right walking stance, executing a right rising block.
  7. Move the left foot to B turning counter clockwise to form a right L-stance, executing a left middle knife hand strike.
  8. Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
  9. Move the right foot to A turning clockwise to form a left L-stance, executing a right middle knife hand strike.
  10. Move the left foot to A forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.

Bring the left foot back to the ready position.

Set Sparring

Three Step Sparring

Numbers 1, 2 & 3

Three step sparring is designed for the beginner to learn the basic techniques. It teaches the student many things i.e. proper distance, correct facing, forearm conditioning, correct blocks, correct stances, counter attacks and timing.

Attackers start by ‘taking their distance’; from parallel stance step forwards and put your right foot just in front of your opponent’s left foot. Adjust your back leg into a walking stance then step all the way back into a left walking stance, obverse low section outer forearm block.

Attack = Three middle section obverse punches in walking stance to the opponents solar plexus (Note: you must punch to the middle so they can block you!).

Defenders start in parallel ready stance. Counter attack should be accompanied by a loud kihap at point of impact.

Basic Level

  1. (First move is right leg back) L stance, middle inner forearm block to the inside three times. Counter Attack = Remaining right leg back, slip the front foot into walking stance reverse punch.
  2. (First move Left leg back) L stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times. Counter Attack = Stepping forwards to the left of the opponent, with the left leg first, then the right leg, turning 90° to the right into a left L stance, execute a right knifehand strike to the back of the neck.
  1. (First move Left leg back) L stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times. Counter Attack = Move the left leg, pivoting on the right foot to make a right walking stance, focus with left hand, then execute a double punch to the opponent’s kidney area.

Theory

What is Three Step Sparring?

Three step sparring is a two person drill to help learn the correct distance from your opponent and to block and counter at the correct time. For children under 10: Three step sparring helps me learn correct distance and timing.
